100 Words you ought to know

The editors of the American Heritage® dictionaries have compiled a list of 100 words they recommend every high school graduate should know. These include words such as abjure, lugubrious, deciduous, circumnavigate and 96 more.

To make it easy the Mental Multivitamin blog compiled a study list complete with definitions so you can use them correctly too!

Updated: Fixed a typo! It's hard enough knowing 100 words when they are correctly spelled!

Wow! Who knew that people expected so much of highschoolers. I work with delinquent teenagers who have trouble in school, so I wouldn't expect them to be up to date. But these words I don't even know and I have a master's degree!

I think one has to recognise the source of the selection of 100 words - a dictionary publisher. There were are few words in the list that are not at all in common use but I am familiar with over 90 of them - but not from reading newspapers or typical magazines. Reading of classics and a variety of literature is how these words can become familiar. I can't see myself perusing a dictionary for pleasure!
